John 4:23-24 ESV “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
Focused on Spirit, Weak on Truth
Some of us need to stop living like an emphasis on sound doctrine is some kind of legalism. Learn not to fear the Truth. Learn not to fear the discipline required to begin to comprehend any non-trivial Truth. Learn not to fear the discipline required to enact what you learn. Don’t ever confuse or disguise spiritual laziness as Christian liberty. If we claim to love the Word (Jesus) we need to learn to love the word (The Scriptures). Loving the Word means studying the word. Knowing the Word means knowing the word.
Hebrews 6:1 ESV “For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God.”
Hebrews 6:1 MIV (Mike Im Version) “You’ve been a Christian how long now? You should be feeding people, but you only whine about not having all your own wants met. You barely know anything about the historic faith you claim to have membership in. Stop fooling yourself that spiritual things should ever come easily or naturally. Anything of value requires sacrifice and discipline. Put down your spiritual Pokemon cards and grow up. Seriously.”
Focused on Truth, Weak on Spirit
Some of us need to stop living like just having correct doctrine is evidence of a mature relationship with Christ. Learn to take every thought captive for Christ – even the doctrinally correct ones. The Scriptures exist and our doctrines were derived to build the body through loving adoration and emulation of Christ. The Scriptures were not God-breathed to help you demonstrate the irony of quoting Jesus or Paul with malicious intent. Christ exalting doctrine does not exist so you can win all your arguments. The Word should be handled like a doctor’s healing scalpel, not a thug’s bludgeon.
A wise brother mentioned something that resonated deeply with me about how proper leadership and teaching should aim to draw others towards Christ rather than simply aim to be right in arguments. How true and how often easily I can forget!
Colossians 1:28 ESV “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ.”
1 Corinthians 13:2 ESV “And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.”
O, that we may be found not only to be mature in Christ, but also to be “maturers” in Christ!
