How would an Exodus Israelite answer the question “Who are your people?”

What would an Israelite say on the way to Canaan (after having experienced the miracles of passover and passing through Red Sea) if you asked him “Who are your people?”

We were in a foreign land under the sentence of death. We were in slavery and bondage, but we took shelter under the blood of the lamb. Then our mediator led us out of slavery and certain death and passing through water we crossed over into freedom and life.

We are now on our way to the promised land but we are not there yet. But he has given us his very Word to bind us into a community and he has given us a tabernacle to live in grace and forgiveness. We do not need to fear because his presence is in our very midst and he will stay with us day and night until he leads us all the way home.

That’s almost exactly word for word what a Christian says also.

Paraphrased and expanded from thoughts by J. Alec Motyer spoken to Tim Keller.

John 5:39

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me
