God Has No Grandchildren

An odd sort of parallelism arises in the book of 1 Samuel.

God’s chosen righteous judge Eli raises ungodly wicked sons (1 Sam 2-3). Ironically, the exact same thing then happens to Samuel (1 Sam 8) who should have known better as he was the very one through whom God prophesied judgment against his mentor Eli’s children.

While God indeed has adopted “children” (John 1:12), God has no “grandchildren.”

That is, each generation must be converted anew. Our children do not coast off of faith imputed to them.

A church’s children’s ministry is the largest influx of unbelievers a church will see each week. If you are a believer, your own children are your first and toughest mission field.

Let us guard with great seriousness the error of taking the gospel for granted in our churches and homes.
